Bangladesh - Investigation into worker deaths

The CCA works closely together with an organisation in Bangladesh, Ain-Salish Kendra (ASK - Law and Media Centre) to investigate workplace deaths that are reported in the national Bengali and English medium newspapers. ASK has a specialist investigation unit that investigates human rights violations

Information about these deaths are obtained from monitoring the national newspapers (to read more about all the deaths monitored, click here) and some of them are given to ASK to investigate. The purpose of the investigations is to:

  • find more about the circumstances of the deaths;
  • find out whether compensation has been provided to the families and if not assist the families to obtain it by working with the Bangladesh Legal Aid Services Trust;
  • consider whether there is any other legal action available on behalf of the families

It is not always easy to get detailed information about the detailed circumstances of these death - but these preliminary investigations represent the best effort.

The summaries will be updated, as more information is obtained. Summaries of new investigations will be placed on the website on a monthly basis.

You can read a summary of the initial investigation reports by clicking on the relevant investigations highlighted below. Please note that names of most of the individuals interviewed as part of the investigations are not given.
