Inspector Numbers

CCA Analysis
We were able to analyse 361 Local Authorities. We are using the number of ‘full-time equivalent’ inspectors as whilst some inspectors work full time on health and safety enforcement issues, others only work part of their time on health and safety issues, and may spend the remainder of their time on food or noise enforcement work.

There are huge differences. Whilst East Dunbartonshire has an inspector for about every 500 premises, Hillingon London Borough has less than half an inspector’s time for almost 3500 premises.

HSE’s extrapolated figures shows that the average number of inspectors per 100 premises has decreased. The largest decrease was in London Boroughs, where the rate fell by 24% to one inspector for every 1651 premises.
