Visits
The
Health and Safety Return requires each Local Authority
to provides information on the number of visits made
by their inspectors to different sorts of premises.
The premises are categorised into seven different
types. These are:

retail
shops; |

catering
services |
|
wholesale
shops, warehouses, fuel and storage depots |
|
provision
of residential accommodation; |
|
leisure
and cultural services; |
|
consumer
services and other premises |
The
visits are divided into five main types. These are

preventative
inspections; |
|
visits
as part of a special survey or enforcement initiative; |
|
revisits
to check; |
|
visits
to investigate accidents; |
|
visits
following requests for service or complaints |
Overall
Picture
HSEs extrapolated figures show that in 1999/2000,
local authorities were responsible for enforcing health
and safety in around 1,194,000 premises and made a
total of 313,000 visits 60% of which were made
to either retail or catering premises. This is 19,000
fewer visits than the previous year. Of these visits:

were preventative inspections; |

12,000
were planned surveys or visits connected with
enforcement initiatives; |
|
38,000
were revisits to check if specific action had
been taken; |
|
22,000
were for the purpose of investigation into reported
incidents; |
