Inspections/Premises
Ratio
Overall Picture
We were able to analyse the record of 354 Local Authorities
which had undertaken a total of 159,269 inspections.
Assuming that each inspection related to a different
premises, one in seven (or 15%) of the total 1,040954
premises received a preventative inspection that year.
It is likely however that some premises had more than
one inspection. It should be noted that this is a
better ratio than the situation with HSEs Field
Operations Directorate where in the same year about
13% of registered premises had an inspection.
Our
analysis showed that whilst inspectors from Mansfield
District Council inspected 68% of premises (1109 inspections
to 1640 premises) none of the 7680 premises in Lambeth
had an inspection; and inspectors in Wycombe District
Council only inspected 0.1% of premises (2 inspections
out of 3403).

We
looked at two local authorities in further detail
- Mansfield District Council which had the highest
ratio, and the London Borough of Lewisham which had
the 11th worst level. The Table below shows for example,
whilst Mansfield DC undertook 17 inspections to its
40 wholesale premises, Lewisham only undertook 13
to its 256 premises; and that whilst Mansfield took
39 inspections to its 34 residential homes, Lewisham
only undertook 5 to its 172 homes.

Ratio
of inspections to premises in different industries
We were able to look at about 340 local authorities
though it differed depending on the industry.
The table shows that the highest ratio of inspections
to premises was in Catering", where on
average over 1 in 4 premises had an inspection, and
the lowest was Offices, where 1 in 14
premises had an inspection. The likely reason why
catering was the highest is that health and safety
inspections are often done at the same time as a food
hygiene inspection.
