Crown prosecution
service drops manslaughter and safety chages against
a company director
The
Crown Prosecution Service's dropped all criminal charges
against Melvyn Hubbard, a director of the building firm
English Brothers Limited based in Wisbech in Cambridgeshire.
The Crown Prosecution Service is due to explain its
reasons for this decision at Northampton Crown court
on Friday 3rd August at 10.30 am.
The company and Mr Hubbard had both been facing charges
of manslaughter and of breaching health and safety law
in relation to the death of 56 year old Bill Larkman
who fell to his death on 29 June 1999 whilst in the
process of constructing an onion store at a farm in
Newton in Cambridgeshire.
Central to the charges was the allegation that the company
and the director had failed to take the necessary precautions,
including the provision of a safety net, to prevent
harm to Mr Larkman.
However, just before the trial started on Monday 30th
July, the Crown Prosecution Service informed the court
that it had agreed to accept a guilty plea on behalf
of the company, whilst dropping all charges against
Mr Hubbard.
