Review of Election Manifestos
The Centre for Corporate Accountability
has reviewed the election manifestos of the Conservative,
Liberal and Labour parties and considered what they
have to say on Corporate Accountability and Public/Worker
Safety.
- the Labour party
has committed itself to reforming the law of corporate
manslaughter;
- the Liberal Party
is willing to give the Health and Safety Executive
more powers and to bring those who "flagrantly"
breach safety law to book;
- the Conservative
and Liberal Party have agreed to implement the recommendations
of Lord Cullen's report into the Paddington disaster.
- none of the parties
have committed themselves to imposing safety duties
upon company directors;
- neither the Labour
party nor the Conservative party manifestos mentions
the Health and Safety Executive
- neither the Labour
not the Conservative party manifestos mention issues
relating to the enforcement of health and safety
law. Since the last election there have been two
major railway crashes involving significant loss
of life and around 1000 workers have suffered fatal
injuries.
