FURTHER DETAILS OF DEATHS
Roger Russell
Roger died of multiple organ failure after being infected with Legionnaires disease from an outdoor hot tub at Merlin Timber Products at Longacres Nursery in Bagshot. He was examining a spa and breathed the bacteria loaded vapour from the pool which had not been disinfected. He was invited to dip his hand into the spa by a salesman as it was switched to full power. the jets blasted him with a mist that contained the bacteria. He fell ill two days later but it was not until he was taken to hospital after 17 days that doctors diagnosed the condition. The inquest was held at Surrey Coroners Court on 13 February 2002. A verdict of 'Accidental Death' was returned. At the inquest, the Environmental Health Officer said that Merlin staff did not have experience in using the hot tubs and an ultraviolet light which kills bacteria was not working properly. The Surrey Coroner said that legislation on spa baths 'falls short of what one might expect' and he would write to the Department of Trade. In June 2004 Surrey Heath Borough Council said it might still prosecute the manufacturers, distributors and sellers of the spa. Chief environmental health officer, Ken Stewart, acknowledged that if the prosecution was to go ahead, a considerable amount of time had passed since the death. He said, 'We want to do the right thing. I think that we need to be very careful that it is correct and that is why it is taking quite a long time to make a decision on it.'
Marcus Snow
Marcus was killed in an incident involving factory machinery. The police reported that Marcus was trapped within machinery in the packing room of the business at Hazelbridge Farm in Pickhurst Road, Chiddingfold. The inquest is to be held at Surrey Coroners Court on a date yet to be set.
